This is a great option for a desktop/laptop user because it’s cheaper than having to buy 3 individual copies. I have been using Norton for a few years now and I will continue to use it…very good product, not perfect but good.
There is virtually no noticeable slow down (I have a gateway NV79 w/ an Icore5 processor, 4GB of DDR3, and windows 7). When my laptop is idle, the antivirus starts running diagnostics since resources are freed up – not when I’m actually trying to get some work or leisure done.
If you check their website, there are others with the same problem. If the next phone call does not resolve the problem, I will take a loss and purchase another system. Norton Internet Security is a great product – it doesn’t bog down any of my computers like some of the competitors’ products. It seems to catch the spyware and occasional viruses I’ve come across in my emails. It’s easy to install and very simple to select desired features. Once you have it set up it disappears into the background.
It’s actually really smart too. It knows exactly when a program I’m about to install is either safe, malicious, or neutral (has holes that other hackers can abuse). I wouldn’t bother with Windows own. I don’t know if it’s still true, but Diskeeper used to be the company that provided Microsoft with its basic defragger tool – basically a crippled version of the real thing, what marketing people call “aspirational” (it looks great on paper, but it doesn’t yet or never will work). I’m sure it grabs some resources, but in today’s era of high-powered personal computers, it’s not a problem. I’m glad I bought it.
After that it wouldn’t do anything except update itself. I could run the activation again, and could see on their website that I was registered, but it still said it was expired. I will only buy Norton; it is the best security/protection software, hands down! The 3-pc bundle at Amazon is a great deal. The protection doesn’t slow down your computer just sitting there, but during a scan it does slow it down pretty much. Safe Web Sort of fast “full scans” Slows down computer during scans. I ran some free antivirus and firewall products on a few other computers at home, and Norton performed so much better in comparison. I can’t say enough good things.
For the second time the disc I received would not run in my computer. I searched the Norton site until I found a Computer chat with Norton.

On some other fronts, I was forced to endure some mandatory corporate requirements training (insert barfing noise here). Yes, once again big brother is forcing some one size fits all, silver bullet methodology, templates included, down our throats. In reality, there is nothing new here and nothing to be alarmed about. This is a fact of life in working for large companies. But, what I can offer is the story of how I plan to conform without derailing my team’s progress.
Corporate templates are not all bad. In fact, they often help create some consistency and satisfy some of the legal obligations we have to meet in the IT World. But, the downside is it can encourage a more narrow view of the problem you are trying to solve. Instead of thinking in the context of the solution functioning in the real world, it is enticing to think in terms of filling in the blanks or checking boxes. Still it can be nice not to have completely reinvent the wheel with every project.
But, my own perspective is that there is the right device for each job. You should use different techniques to document the required features for an on-line shopping cart than a point of sale ad-hoc reporting system. With enterprise templates the norm is an artifact that is meant to satisfy all types of solutions. Many of the pieces are not going to be appropriate to your particular venture. I recommend keeping the core of the document and its title (F.R.D., F.S.D., Fred, etc) in tack and removing the portions that are not appropriate for your venture and adding the sections that are appropriate to your venture. You should keep the powers to be happy, and at the same time be free to think outside the box and provide the audience of your documents, what they will need to do their jobs.
Now, before you totally gut your mandatory “templates” and such, just a few words on the stuff that is almost always needed:
1. Have Traceability Make sure that you can illustrate how each functional need aligns to a business need.
2. Be All-inclusive and fully-exhaustive- This is a topic that deserves its own post and an endless amount of community discussion to be fully addressed. But, the point is as a system or business analyst you need to be the tester before the tester. Do not take one-line “requirements” as is. Make grids, truth tables, and alternate path after alternate path to think through as many situations as possible. This will uncover the business questions and inputs that are notobviousupfront. Usually this is where standard corporate” “template” “fails.

If you use QFX (the preferred, newer format) then YNAB is able to determine those that have already been imported so you don’t get duplicates.
I still use Quicken, and some day, I may give it up! But, I won’t part with my YNAB Pro software. However, in this system, instead it will subtract that 400 from your next month’s total budget. Instead of making a massive adjustment in a single category, you will instead have to make smaller (though still potentially large) adjustments in many other categories the next month to make up for it, as you will have a smaller total amount of money to assign to categories for the next months budget.
I must admit, I had to start over twice with YNAB, not because the software is difficult to use, but because I was trying to use it based upon what I knew about budgeting, you can’t do that. I sleep much better at night these days, thanks to YNAB Pro! YNAB does that, but it also helps you budget and plan for *future* expenses. In my opinion this is what makes the program so valuable. In a truly frightening kind of “I spend that much money on THAT!” You can see the impact of your daily coffee habit on your car insurance payment 6 months away.
The iPhone app isn’t really that useful compared to the main program. A majority of the consumer-grade financial software programs only gives you a static view of what you *spent*.
If we need to buy a new pair of pants, we don’t have to wonder if we can afford it, we just look in the “Clothing” category and see how much we have available. If the money is there, we buy without guilt. YNAB seemed to have the features I was looking for as well as consistently good reviews. So far have found the system easy to master and am looking forward easily tracking progress toward goals such as my travel, holiday, and loan repayment. It’s much more flexible and user-friendly! I can sort and run reports so much easier. I have learned to save for upcoming bills, vet care, insurance, car repairs, and all of life’s other little surprises. I am no longer living paycheck to paycheck. In all honesty, though, that’s about it. The only technical issue I’ve run into so far was when downloading and importing transactions using QFX files (which is actually pretty painless, BTW). When we took our budget to our Financial Peace University class and showed them our one page versus the four pages they had prepared manually, we won over a couple other converts. I couldn’t recommend this software more. This software is nothing more than a logbook, pencil, and calculator. You can also do the same thing with any quality spreadsheet program.
I was up and running within a few days of installing it. garden spades.
