I still use Quicken, and some day, I may give it up! But, I won’t part with my YNAB Pro software. However, in this system, instead it will subtract that 400 from your next month’s total budget. Instead of making a massive adjustment in a single category, you will instead have to make smaller (though still potentially large) adjustments in many other categories the next month to make up for it, as you will have a smaller total amount of money to assign to categories for the next months budget.
I must admit, I had to start over twice with YNAB, not because the software is difficult to use, but because I was trying to use it based upon what I knew about budgeting, you can’t do that. I sleep much better at night these days, thanks to YNAB Pro! YNAB does that, but it also helps you budget and plan for *future* expenses. In my opinion this is what makes the program so valuable. In a truly frightening kind of “I spend that much money on THAT!” You can see the impact of your daily coffee habit on your car insurance payment 6 months away.
The iPhone app isn’t really that useful compared to the main program. A majority of the consumer-grade financial software programs only gives you a static view of what you *spent*.

I am no longer living paycheck to paycheck. In all honesty, though, that’s about it. The only technical issue I’ve run into so far was when downloading and importing transactions using QFX files (which is actually pretty painless, BTW). When we took our budget to our Financial Peace University class and showed them our one page versus the four pages they had prepared manually, we won over a couple other converts. I couldn’t recommend this software more. This software is nothing more than a logbook, pencil, and calculator. You can also do the same thing with any quality spreadsheet program.
